Attraction

Sometimes today, I know that men aren’t attracted to WOMEN, like women on TV and in movies.  They’re attracted to fake eyelashes and fake boobs, makeup.  Hairspray and concealer and eyeshadow and silicone and push-up bras and heels and extensions and jewelry and lighting and veneers and gloss and blush.  Color contacts and volumizer and plumper and mascara and highlights and surgery.

How drastically these things change an average-looking woman– into something else entirely.  It will fall apart, crumble in your hands.

Music

Sitting in Starbucks today, watching people walk by the window in their peacoats and hats, in the sunshine.  Breath escapes from their mouths, tufts.  They hover as spirits, clinging to their faces.

Being alone in public is deeply gratifying: one can see and be seen, but one doesn’t have to entertain.  So I think and listen.  Music is essential.  It’s so beautiful and necessary.  I’m afraid of music—what it has the power to make me do and what it has the power to make me feel.
